The Wiegers’ family connection to the truck and trailer equipment industry goes back to the early 1900’s when Ernest Wiegers, Sr., a blacksmith’s apprentice in The Netherlands, immigrated to the United States at the age of 16. In search of the American dream, he found a job working at a blacksmith shop in Paterson, New Jersey.
In 1919, Ernest partnered with friend and fellow Dutch immigrant Ralph Veenema, and purchased the small Paterson blacksmith shop where they were both employed. They named their new business Veenema & Wiegers (V&W), and as a result of their hard work, honesty, quality products and outstanding service, they soon outgrew their small shop in Paterson. They moved to a larger facility in Prospect Park, New Jersey, where they became pioneers in the truck and trailer industry, building specialty equipment for the booming Paterson silk industry.
In the late 1960’s, Ernest Sr.’s son Clarence, along with his two sons, Ernest and Ralph, decided to venture out on their own. Wiegers Inc. officially opened for business in Clifton, New Jersey in December 1970. Ernest and Ralph saw a need for servicing the growing number of trailers and trucks in North Jersey. They also wanted to continue building specialty truck bodies and trailers. Applying the same family values of hard work, quality products and integrity, Wiegers Inc. flourished.
In an effort to add more sales to its thriving service business, Wiegers Inc. soon began distributing for various equipment manufactures such as Dorsey Trailers (1977), Waltco Liftgates (1982), Anthony Liftgates (1980), Iroquois Mfg. (1983), and others. Our newest distributorship with Strick Trailers began in 2022.
Ernest’s two oldest sons, Tom and Ken, began showing an interest in the business at an early age, and could often be seen in the shop cleaning, organizing parts, and “helping the guys.” By the time they were in high school, Tom and Ken were valued members of the work force, spending their summers working in the shop.
In preparation for their future with Wiegers Inc., both Tom and Ken graduated from Calvin College (now Calvin University) in Grand Rapids, Michigan with degrees in Business. (Tom ‘89, Ken ‘91). While at college, both continued to hone their mechanical skills by working for truck equipment distributors in the Grand Rapids area.
Today, ownership has fully transitioned to the fourth generation of Wiegers. Tom oversees the Sales Department and Ken leads the Service Department. Both remain “hands on” and can regularly be seen in the shop diagnosing, troubleshooting and assisting the mechanics – all in an effort to maintain the highest quality standards and to meet customer demands in a timely manner.
Wiegers Inc. continues to be a “full line” truck and trailer equipment distributor, representing a wide variety of equipment manufacturers. As an authorized distributor of every major liftgate manufacturer in North America and Europe, and as an expert designer of specialty truck bodies, Wiegers Inc. products can be found in use in many industries, throughout North Jersey and beyond.
Today, after more than 50 years, Wiegers Inc. continues to look to the future. The 5th generation of Wiegers is already working in the shop, developing the skills to carry on the Wiegers tradition. We would be honored if you would stop by to meet us and let us build for you.
